Long Island is a large island located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of New York, just east of Manhattan. It is separated from the mainland by the East River and from the state of Connecticut by Long Island Sound. Long Island is about 118 miles long and 23 miles wide at its widest point, and it is the largest island in the contiguous United States. It is made up of four counties: Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. The island is home to several major cities, including Brooklyn and Queens, which are part of New York City, as well as the city of Long Island City and the towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead, and Oyster Bay.
